Text thx to the crew at Cape Sport Center. Thx Ant and Esti. The
Lagoon is a very special place indeed and home to over 1/3rd
of South Africa's salt marshes & 40% of it's Sandveld. The
natural beauty of this place is incredible and one which will
stay with you for a lifetime. The first National Park of South
Africa gives a unique African experience. Tortoises, Zebras,
Gemsbok, Wildebeest, Ostrich and more inhabit this beautiful
place and a slow leisurely drive or bike ride through the park
is an amazing experience. On the shores of the lagoon are 2
Bird-Hides for the amateur bird watcher or experts alike. Home
to over 70,000 migrating waders, the largest colony of Kelp
Gulls in SA, 50% of the World's Swift Tern, 25% of the Crowned
Cormorant and over a quarter of the Black Oystercatchers, the
Langebaan Lagoon hosts a total of over 250 bird species, over
a quarter of SA's total. In April the Curlew Sandpiper, a 20cm
bird, will start it's annual journey to Siberia to their breeding
grounds and then return for a well earned 8 month rest! The
lagoon was classified as a Wetland of International importance
according to the Ramsar Convention criteria in 1975. The park
it's self gained National Park status in 1985. In winter and
Spring time, the park transforms it self into a place of incredible
colour as the wildflowers burst into life. A spectacular park
is right on the shores of Langebaan Lagoon and it is all within
a hour of Cape Town!
Kitesurfing or Kiteboarding is taking the World by storm. One of the
fastest growing sports is now available to you! Cape Sports Center
is located on safe shores of a kiteboarder's dream. Clean, Consistent
winds and warm, flat, warm waters make this South Africa's premier
kitesurfing destination and the site of SA's leading kitesurfing school.
The lagoon offers a perfect location to learn this sport and with
Qualified Instructors, Naish Kitesurfing equipment, warm safe waters
and constant winds, where else would you want to go! Packaged together
with the largest windsurfing & kitesurfing rental station in the
Southern Hemisphere, a fully stocked retail shop and first class accommodation,
no other place in SA can compare!
Langebaan was once home to the largest whaling station in the Southern
Hemisphere, which fortunately is now no longer in operation! Situated
on South Africa's beautiful West Coast, Langebaan offers the unique
waters of the Lagoon and Saldahna Bay as it's main draw. The warm,
safe waters allow windsurfers, Kiteboarders, Kayakers and fishermen
breath taking views and some of the best conditions in the world!
The
town it's self is home to some very original South African gems,
Die Strandloper, Froggies, Pearly's on The Beach and of course "Eve's
Footprint!" Eve's Footprint was discovered on the entrance
to the Lagoon and is one of the earliest proof of modern man's or
woman's existence on this planet! Over 170,000 years old, this fossil
shows how people have been coming to this town for a lot longer
than we thought! Even a pair of bindings were found close by, so
perhaps she was a wakeboarder!
There are a lot of activities around and about Langebaan and it
is pretty hard to not enjoy yourself whilst here. Golf Courses,
a National Park, a Casino at Club Mykonos, Horseback rides, Sky
diving, Helicopter rides, Fishing, bird watching, whale watching,
paint ball, windsurfing, kitesurfing, surfing, partying, sea kayaking,
and of course a Saturday night and the world famous "Flamingos"
night club!
Yes time flies by and Langebaan has a lot more to offer than your
first impression gives of this sleepy town! Come and experience
life "West Coast" style! |
